Hosted by by Quiet Communities "Quest for Quiet Conference Series" and Boston University's College of Arts & Sciences class, "Research for Environmental Agencies and Organizations."

In 1996, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency phased-out leaded gasoline for cars and trucks due to the serious health hazards of lead. Yet, the use of leaded gas in small aircraft was allowed to continue.

Lead does not break down but cycles through the environment with high costs to the public including impact on child development and higher incidences of heart disease.

  • Workers and neighbors of general aviation airports where leaded gas is used are disproportionately exposed. The inequity is impossible to ignore.

An accelerated transition away from leaded gas in all applications is necessary, but how feasible is this for airports and airplane owners? With an understanding of the urgency:

  • What tools of governance and what private actions should we immediately engage to speed the transition?
  • How can be we best combine strategies for most rapidly deploying new fuels? What strategic assistance and funding is available?
  • What new infrastructure is needed?
  • What overarching principles need to be kept in mind as we move forward as quickly as we can to lead-free skies?

Have ideas? Send them to rreibste@bu.edu with "Avgas" in the Subject line. Ideas submitted before Dec 12th will be shared at the conference. Ideas will be summarized and presented in a report.

Jamie Banks, Founder and President of Quiet Communities (QC) first learned about the leaded aviation gas problem while working on aircraft noise issues. Rick Reibstein, Lecturer in Environmental Law and Policy, Department of Earth and Environment at BU, conducts public conversations on lead and chairs QC's Legal Advisory Council. Becky Petrou O'Rourke is a student in Reibstein's class "Research for Environmental Agencies and Organizations."
